Manchester United dealt blow in pursuit of Bayern Munich star

The German side have ruled out selling the player this summer

Manchester United are looking to bolster their squad in the transfer window after an underwhelming campaign last season, not winning a single silverware. They finished second in the Premier League, 19 points behind Manchester City.

Jose Mourinho prioritized the signing of a holding midfielder this summer and completed the signing of Brazilian midfielder Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk for a reported fee of £52.5 million. Marouane Fellaini also signed a contract extension until 2020 after it was thought that he will leave this summer.

But the Portuguese manager wants more signings before the transfer window and it is believes that he still wants to sign another midfielder. They have been linked with a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara for the past month.

The Spain International joined the German club from Barcelona for a reported fee of €25 million, signing a four year contract in 2013. He has established himself as an integral part of the team and has won five Bundesliga titles in a row, as well as the DFB-Pokal, the DFL Supercup and the Club World Cup.

He was a regular for the Bundesliga giants during the 2017/2018 campaign, scoring 7 goals and assisting 2 in 32 appearances in all completions.

The 27 year old remains an important player for the club and showed his commitment by signing a four year contract extension last summer. Despite that, he has been heavily linked with a summer exit.

They already have 8 midfielders in addition to the Spaniard vying for a place in the starting XI in the upcoming season and there were speculations that he could be sold by the new manager Niko Kovac.

But the Red Devils have dealt blow in pursuit of Thiago as Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has dismissed the speculations that he will leave the club this summer.

He told Abendzeitung: “Thiago is an important player for us and we have never once articulated the thought that he should leave the club.

“There has never been anything to the story whatsoever.”
