Manchester United legend explains how the captaincy will benefit Paul Pogba

The midfielder was given given the captain’s armband last weekend

Paul Pogba returned to Manchester United in the summer of 2016, on a five-year contract for a then-record for highest football transfer fee at £89.3 million. He left the club to join Juventus in 2012 for more game time, where he established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world.

The France International started off the last season off positively but was benched following a few poor performances. His form was often questioned last season and was even criticized by Jose Mourinho himself.

Though the 25 year old responded with brilliant performances towards the end of the season and won the United’s Player of the month for April. He ended the season with 6 goals and 11 assists in all competitions.

However, there has been speculations that the midfielder’s relation with Jose Mourinho is not good and they weren’t even in speaking terms. As a result he has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, with the European transfer window still open.

Amid transfer links, he returned to training last week after post World Cup holiday and started in the club’s first match of the season against Leicester City on Friday. He was given the Captain’s armband and converted a penalty to give the team 1-0 lead.

Mourinho revealed on Friday that there is no problem between him and Pogba. The manager claimed he’s never been so happy with him and will be again the Captain’s armband this weekend.

United legend Ryan Giggs believes Pogba’s game could improve with extra responsibility.

He said as quoted by Sky Sorts:

“I think everyone recognises the quality Paul Pogba has and he had an excellent World Cup, so after winning that it was a recognition of what he can bring to the team.

“From the outside he looks like a leader but what we haven’t seen is the consistency of the likes of Bryan Robson and Roy Keane, so that extra responsibility will hopefully help him maintain his levels.

“The captains I played under really had that consistency and would still contribute on their bad days and I’ve got no doubts that he will reach those levels of consistency for United and be a top, top player.”
