Man United needs one more signing to complete their squad.

The Red Devils has been urged by former club legend Dimitar Berbatov to sign one right-back to compete with first-choice right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Man United had a quite busy transfer window with the signing of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

Berbatov told Betfair: “I am very happy that they are bringing in Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

“He is a World Cup and Champions League winner, he has a winning mentality and he has played with the best over the years.

“I am looking forward to seeing how he is going to settle into the team and compliment Harry Maguire.

“Jadon Sancho is already good friends with the England players in United’s squad, which is a great thing to have when you go into a new team.

“I’m sure he is also going to push the other forwards to perform better too.

“The United team is in a good place. They could possibly look to strengthen in the right-back position.

“Aaron Wan-Bissaka is definitely first choice but I would like to see him have a solid back up who will challenge and push him. Other than that, I think they are pretty complete as a team.”

Man United one of the favourites to win Champions League this season

Manchester United touted to win Champions League this season.

The Red Devils named as one of the favourites to win the European competition along with Bayern Munich, PSG, Chelsea and Man City.

This is according to Paul Merson who believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will lift the coveted European Cup this season but has to wait for the Premier League for at least one more season.

‘I’ve gone for Manchester United as one of the top five contenders for the Champions League this season and I’ll explain why,’ Merson wrote in a column for Sportskeeda.

‘I know they were knocked out in the group stages last season, but the way they play suits Champions League football more than the Premier League.

‘They counterattack as well as anyone in Europe and have a squad that has match-winners across the pitch with the additions of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

‘Sancho adds a bit more guile to the team, while Varane is an experienced defender who will not only allow them to play a higher line but also complement Harry Maguire perfectly.

‘Manchester United are the biggest club in world football in my opinion, so I’m not going to call them dark-horses.

‘They’ve gone almost eight years without winning the Premier League or the Champions League and that could so easily become 15 or 20 if they don’t take the initiative.

‘They look like a strong team and it goes without saying that each one of their forwards, barring Edinson Cavani, are incredibly quick!

‘I don’t know if Manchester United will win the Premier League title, but when you look at the way they play, they could be a force to be reckoned with in the UEFA Champions League.’

Raphael Varane might not be ready for the Leeds game.

The French defender signed a four-year deal with the Red Devils and is expected to undergo a medical this week before his arrival is announced.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hopes that the deal could be completed soon.

“[It’s] Paperwork now, you know, with Brexit and all that,” Solskjaer said. “I was going to say malarkey but I don’t want to go into politics!

“It’s cost us a few days, with the visa, but he’s been looking after himself.

“Of course, we’ve got his medical first and hopefully that’s going to be done soon.”

On the other hand, Jadon Sancho is also not available for training which means he would also be missing out on United’s first game against Leeds United.

“They still haven’t trained with us, and I need to see how they are,” Solskjaer added.

“I can’t see them being available for Everton [a pre-season friendly this weekend], but hopefully they will be ready to be on the bench [against Leeds].”

Facundo Pellistri will continue his development at former club Deportivo Alaves.

The 19-year old Uruguayan winger will rejoin Alaves on a season-long loan.

He joined the Red Devils in October 2020, spent three months with the U-23 side and then rejoined Alaves on a six-month loan.

The teenager failed to record a goal or an assist for the La Liga outfit last term as he was struggling with a muscle injury.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer heaps praise on the talented youngster who has been phenomenal in the pre-season with Manchester United.

“I thought he was bright and he took his goal really well,” Solskjaer said at Derby. “Great first touch. Good pass by Shola [Shoretire] but great first touch with sets him up.

“It was a very good goal, the first touch set him up and he’s very good at dribbling so going past the goalkeeper wasn’t a problem. He was bright when he came on.

“I think he showed what he is because he’s a difficult player to play against. One against one he can go past people so very pleased with him.

“I can see a loan deal for him, there’s been loads of interest and for his best interests a loan would be what we look for.”

Jesse Lingard enjoyed a successful loan spell with West Ham last season.

The 28-year old midfielder scored nine goals and made five assists in 16 appearances for the Hammers last season.

He was unfortunate to miss out on Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad.

He believes he needs to be more consistent and desires to succeed in his boyhood club.

Jesse told us: “Yeah, it was a great time. It was like hitting the refresh button. I was always ready to hit the ground running and I was always fit and ready to play.

“I played every game since I got there and when you play a run of games like that you get a bit of confidence. Of course, the goals came and assists as well. West Ham were brilliant with me: the team, the staff, the club. They helped me get to where I am but it took a lot of hard work from my side as well.

“We had a lot of in-house staff we needed to work on with the analysis stuff and, of course, the whiteboards,” he added. “Those were some individual goals of mine that I liked to set before I went there.

“At the time, it [one goal] was obviously to make the March internationals [with England]. Goals, assists, take-ons, shots. To be productive in each game and to keep that consistency.

“The consistency is definitely a main thing. When you’re playing regular football, you’ve got to keep that consistency and keep scoring, or try and affect the game in a different way if you don’t score or assist.”

Gary Neville pinpoints the position United needs to work out

Gary Neville thinks the goalkeeper situation needs to be sorted out.

United legend Gary Neville is happy with his club’s transfer business this summer.

The Red Devils have signed Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane which will cost them around £115m plus add-ons.

“He’s a good age, got massive experience, he’s got a good centre-back alongside him. In fact, he’s got a good back-four,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“So he’s not coming into a team where he’s having to hold it together. He’s, you could argue, the last piece of the jigsaw in the sense that the rest of them are doing a pretty good job.

“And I think Harry Maguire will come out of this tournament with England strong, more confident than ever before, he’s got a great centre-back partner alongside him now in Varane.

“Varane has played at Real Madrid in the biggest games you could ever play in, World Cups, the lot, so they’ve got two brilliant centre-backs.

“If they can stay fit together… and obviously the two full-backs as well who have got great energy, both of them are great defenders – one of them is great going forward and Aaron Wan-Bissaka is definitely improving.

“I think just sort the goalkeeping situation out, settle that down, decide who is going to be number one and United are in a good position defensively and Sancho can hopefully bring that balance that’s needed in attack.”

Leon Goretzka will stay put at Bayern Munich.

The 26-year old midfielder has been linked with the Red Devils for the past few weeks now who has less than 12 months left on his Bayern contract.

The player is yet to sign an extension but manager Julian Nagelsmann believes Goretzka will commit his future to the Bundesliga champions.

Bayern Munich signed Goretzka on a free transfer from Schalke in 2018 and could be a potential replacement for Paul Pogba if he decides to leave in the summer.

“I’m not involved enough that I have a say every day,” Nagelsmann told reporters. “I stay out of these issues.

“Of course I have talked to him about my plans for him. I’ve told him I’d be happy if he extended and I’m also confident. There are several topics involved when it comes to discussing a contract extension.

“I’ll continue to focus on the sports side of things and show him he can be one of the most dangerous midfielders in Europe. He has potential to get even better.”

Mna United outcast Phil Jones is about to resume training.

The Red Devils will announce the signing of World Cup winner Raphael Varane from Real Madrid next week.

His arrival will make way for a loan move for Axel Tuanzebe and the return of Phil Jones to the first-team fold.

OGS has no intention to sell Jones this summer despite his last two seasons riddling with injuries.

“He is due to start training over the weekend when we’ve got everyone in on Monday, which is a big plus for him,” OGS said.

“I’ve had similar troubles in my career. He’s such a professional, good lad, and it’s great to see him ready to train again and hopefully he can first of all train with us and then hopefully get game time soon.

“If he can play in the Under-23s to start with, or we can arrange something behind closed doors for him, because I know exactly the feeling [of] being out for so long. You just want to feel your way in.

“He’s always served the club, but it was time for him to look after himself and his own health, but now he’s ready to train with us.”

Raphael Varane is set to join Man United by next week.

The 28-year old World Cup winner will join the Red Devils after a deal in principle was agreed between Real Madrid and Manchester United.

The Frenchman will be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s third signing of the summer after they signed Jadon Sancho and Tom Heaton earlier this month.

His French compatriot Patrice Evra who played 273 times for the club is a long-time admirer of the Real Madrid defender.

He is the ideal partner to complement Harry Maguire in the centre of defence.

Evra told The Athletic: “Varane reminds me of Rio Ferdinand. Great with the ball, great in the air.

“He’s the complete centre-back. I remember my first game with (him for) the French national team and I was so impressed.

“He was so young yet so good with the ball, so fast and his anticipation was perfect.

“He’s calm with the ball and he can score too. It’s a top, top signing for Manchester United.”

Bruno Fernandes will continue to challenge for some silverware in this new season.

The Portuguese international scored 28 goals last season for the Red Devils and is eyeing silverware in the upcoming season.

Man United failed to earn a trophy even after reaching the finals of the Europa League with Villarreal.

“It could be in my personal life, the good season,” Fernandes told the PA News Agency.

“No, obviously I think as always we have a chance to win whatever we want, or wherever we try to win because I think last season unluckily for us we don’t get to win any trophies.

“We get to the final of Europa League but unluckily we don’t win.

“But, still, with the transfers or without the transfers, Manchester United will always be a tough opponent, we will try to win every competition we are included (in).

“As I always said, for me, being at this level, at this club, we want to win. It’s because of that I know we have the chance to win everything we are included (in).

“After, you can win or not, but we have the chance and we should and we will do our best to win something of course.”
