It seems this plan will come to fruition by triggering a clause to extend the contract by 12 months. This will only happen if the two parties do not come to an agreement before Christmas.
Unless they reach an agreement or Manchester United triggers this clause, it could spell trouble for the club after the expiry of Rashford’s contract. Taking into account that Rashford will become a free agent after that, it seems like Man Utd would be losing a valuable player and getting nothing for it.
Currently, United is looking to offer a five-year contract to the forward, which would keep him in the club until 2028. Considering all the benefits he has brought to the club, this spells a bright future for Old Trafford in that time.
What are Rashford’s other options?
Despite his fruitful career in United, it seems as though there are other and possibly better options for Marcus Rashford.
Since the news of his possible departure next year came about, several clubs have expressed their interest in the player. Among the more notable names are Barcelona, Paris Saint Germain, and Liverpool.
PSG, in particular, has been very vocal about their interest in the forward. And although it seemed like the talks were going in their favor, Rashford is reportedly not interested in the deal. This news comes after a supposed meeting between Rashford’s representatives and PSG.
On the other hand, Barcelona has not been so vocal about the player. It seems as though they’re mostly monitoring his situation and preparing for the possible end of his contract.
Finally, Liverpool has taken much the same stance as Barcelona, confirming that they are interested in Rashford and his performance. However, this is the worst-case scenario from Manchester United’s perspective. This is because no player has moved between these two clubs since 1964 when Phil Cisnall left Old Trafford for Liverpool. Even if Rashford were to leave United, it’s highly unlikely that he would move to Liverpool following his departure.
Ultimately, it seems as though his future in Manchester United is a shaky one if talks of the extension clause are coming up. Regardless, his stellar performance so far in the 2022-23 season could open more doors for him than are available now.
In the end, this becomes a waiting game, although fans can already speculate how the talks with Rashford will go.
