Manchester United announces permanent departure of Mateo Mejia to Sevilla

In a definitive move signaling both clubs’ commitment to reshaping their squads, Manchester United has officially confirmed the permanent departure of 20-year-old Colombian winger Mateo Mejia to Sevilla. Mejia becomes the seventh player to bid farewell to the Red Devils in this transfer window, marking the first exit in a permanent deal.

Despite having trained with the first team and even featuring in last summer’s pre-season tour to the USA, Mejia found himself predominantly in the Under-21 side this season. The promising winger showcased his talent by notching up three goals and five assists from nine Premier League 2 matches.

Having joined Manchester United in 2019 from Real Zaragoza, the Spanish-born attacker penned a new contract just last summer. However, United’s recent strategy to trim down their wage bill and clear the path for emerging talents has seen Mejia head to Spain.

Sevilla, the reigning Europa League champions, have struggled in both domestic and European competitions this season. Sitting perilously close to the relegation zone in La Liga, the Spanish outfit welcomes Mejia in the hopes of injecting some fresh energy into their campaign. The young winger could make his debut this Sunday against table-topping Girona.

As United bids farewell to another youth prospect, the club expressed its best wishes to Mejia via their official website, emphasizing their keen interest in following his future endeavors.

This move aligns with the club’s ongoing policy of parting ways with youth players deemed unlikely to make the leap to the senior squad.
