Andreas Pereira opens up on snubbing Jose Mourinho's request to stay last summer

The midfielder was very impressive against Leicester City

Andreas Pereira came through the ranks of Manchester United and made his senior debut back in the 2014-2015 season. However, he struggled to be a regular for the club as there was lot of competitions in the midfield.

After the arrival of Jose Mourinho back in 2016, the 22 year old was loaned out to Granada for the whole season in order to get regular first team football.

Former Chelsea manager wanted the midfielder to stay with the Red Devils and even requested him. But the player wanted to leave for another season long loan as he was sure he will get enough minutes and joined Valencia, making 29 appearances for them.

He impressed during his stay in Spain and returned to club this summer. He featured in the club’s pre-season and was very impressive. The Belgian also started in the club’s opener against Leicester City last weekend and controlled the midfield well along with Paul Pogba and new summer signing Fred.

Pereira has opened up on why he decided to snub Mourinho’s request to stay at Old Trafford last summer. He felt he wouldn’t have have the chance to play in the first team football but insist he has improved as a player due to the loan spell.

Pereira told Sky Sports: “I learned a lot of things being on my own, I lived on my own there, and it’s different than living over here.

“I’m more professional now, I know what my body needs every day, I’m more mature now than I was two years ago.

“They’ve been really good for me, I think I’ve totally changed as a player and a human being after these two years.

“It was very difficult for me to take that decision.

“Like Mourinho is one of the best coaches in the world, and he tells you to stay, and if you go against it you’ve only got things to lose in your head really.

“I was nervous about that, but it came out well.

“We had a great year in Valencia, and I am a better player, and this season he has a better Andreas than he could have had last year.

“He hasn’t told me [that I have improved], but I think he will see this in games.

“I have a very good relationship with him, he is very good with me, very honest.”
