Benfica set to secure Manchester United Left-Back Alvaro Fernandez permanently

Benfica is set to solidify their ranks by permanently acquiring Manchester United’s left-back Alvaro Fernandez this summer, as reported by The Athletic.

Fernandez, who has been on loan to the Portuguese giants since January, has made quite an impact on the Primeira Liga stage, featuring in 13 matches and even notching up a goal.

The deal is structured with an initial payment of £5.1 million, with an additional £2.6 million slated to be paid out if the 21-year-old meets specified milestones and accomplishments.

This move comes after Fernandez’s loan stint at Granada in La Liga earlier in the 2023-24 season, where he showcased his talents in 13 appearances before being recalled by Manchester United and subsequently loaned to Benfica.

Despite impressing during pre-season with the Red Devils, Fernandez found himself surplus to requirements for manager Erik ten Hag, who opted to bring in Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham Hotspur to bolster their left-back options due to injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

Fernandez’s journey to Benfica has been marked by perseverance and determination. After a successful loan spell at Championship side Preston North End in the 2021-22 season, where he was named the Young Player of the Year, the Spanish youth international now looks to cement his place in Benfica’s lineup and make a name for himself on the European stage.

While Manchester United will retain a buyback option and a sell-on clause, all eyes are on Fernandez as he prepares to embark on the next chapter of his career in Portugal, eager to contribute to Benfica’s ambitions in both domestic and continental competitions.
