Luke Shaw Insists Under Jose Mourinho He Might Not Have Won The Award

Luke Shaw feels he wouldn’t have been in the contention for Manchester United’s player of the year award if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had not taken the charge at the club.

The 23 year old swept all the personal accolades as he was crowned the Matt Busby Player of the Year alongside Player’s Player of the Year. The left back has been one of the most consistent players for United this season.

Shaw racked up 40 appearances this season, his highest number since arriving at the Old Trafford from Southampton. His antics for the Red Devils also saw him being called up for the England national team and he is expected to be a crucial part of Gareth Southgate’s long term vision.

Shaw said, “It’s nicer for me personally to win the awards last night after the way things have been at times.

“If you looked back a year ago, or maybe even before Ole come in, if someone said I was going to win those awards I’d have said there was no chance.

“But that’s why it’s nice, things change so quickly in football – one minute you’re down, the next you’re up and you need to keep on that up.

“I would have rather had a worse season and won a trophy but it wasn’t meant to be. It’s an honour to win those trophies, but it would’ve been better to do it with having a better season as a team.

“I just need to forget this season now and refocus on what we’re going to do in 2018/19.”
