David de Gea was definitely the unsung hero in the Carabao Cup final.

The 32-year-old Spaniard’s contract with the Red Devils expires at the end of this season who is often criticised for his poor distribution and reluctance to run off the line.

He is the highest earner at Old Trafford earning a staggering £375,000 per week and is currently in his 12th season as a Man United player.

His long-term future with the club was in jeopardy earlier this season but according to some sources, De Gea is willing to take a significant paycut to extend his stay at Old Trafford.

He is currently the longest-serving player in the United squad and has made over 517 appearances.

In the Carabao Cup final, De Gea kept his 181st clean sheet for the club breaking the club’s all-time record previously held by Peter Schmeichel.

Earlier in February, the Spaniard expressed his desire to retire at Old Trafford amid positive contract talks.

De Gea said: “I’m very relaxed. I just focus on training, perform as best as I can. But, for sure, it’s going to end in a good way.

“I hope (to stay for the rest of my career). I was saying this is my club, I’ve been here many, many years and it’s a huge honour to be here and I’m so happy here.”
