Manchester United are considering alternatives for Toby Alderweireld

They do not want to pay Tottenham’s asking price

Manchester United are looking to bolster their squad this summer after an underwhelming campaign last season, not winning a single silverware. Their priority is to add defensive reinforcements and will look to sell few players in order to accommodate new signings.

Despite having the most clean sheets and the second best defensive record in the Premier League last term, Jose Mourinho is still not happy as he had to rely on auxiliary full-backs and failed to settle on a consistent central defensive axis due to injuries and inconsistency.

The Red Devils have been linked with host of defenders ahead of the transfer window and one of them is Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld. He is considered one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.

The defender has been linked with a move away this summer after the club has struggled to come to terms with the defender’s high week demands. They do not want pay such high wages and may sell him this summer as he has a release clause in his contract which will drop his value to £25 million next summer.

The Belgian International just made three appearances since returning from injury back in February. Though Mauricio Pochettino claimed that his absence is not due to contract situations but it’s hard to believe because the defender was one of the first names in the starting XI before transfer talk was sparked.

United are not fully convinced by Alderweireld and do not have him at the top of their shortlist, according to the Manchester Evening News. Scouts have questioned his profile, and the club are said to value former Southampton ace at about £20 million less than the Spurs asking price of £70 million.

Raphael Varane, Jerome Boateng, Kalidou Koulibaly, Milan Skriniar, Alessio Romagnoli, Jose Gimenez and Caglar Soyuncu are all prospective targets for the club as the Portuguese looking to strengthen his backline for next season.
