Erik ten Hag could attempt to sign Thomas Muller in January.

The veteran midfielder could leave the Bundesliga if Bayern Munich fails to reach a compromise with Muller on the contract extension.

The 34-year-old German has attracted attention from MLS and Saudi Arabia in the summer but Muller wants to continue playing in the Champions League.

Man United boss Erik ten Hag tried to sign the midfielder at the start of this year and could revive his interest in the upcoming transfer window.

The Dutch boss believes that the veteran has the kind of leadership that will be needed to steady the ship at Old Trafford.

But Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel insists the club veteran should remain beyond the business end of this campaign.

‘Of course we want him on our team,’ Tuchel said.

‘It goes without saying that he wants to continue. He is in great shape, keen to train and play, he is a footballer through and through. Why shouldn’t he continue playing at the highest level?

‘Of course, we don’t know now what role he will have in the new season.

‘It’s only November now, so of course we can’t say how his role will develop, but he is a legendary player, an icon for our team and gets the maximum respect.’
