Dimitar Berbatov has praised Manchester United star's performance against Leicester City

The player was heavily linked with an exit during the transfer window

Paul Pogba returned to Manchester United in the summer of 2016, on a five-year contract for a then-record for highest football transfer fee at £89.3 million. He left the club to join Juventus in 2012 for more game time, where he established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world.

The France International was pivotal for the team during his first season with the Red Devils and helped the club to win the League cup and their first ever Europa League title.

The 25 year old started the last season off positively but was benched following a few poor performances. His form was often questioned last season and was even criticized by Jose Mourinho himself.

Though the Frenchman responded with brilliant performances towards the end of the season and won the United’s Player of the month for April. He ended the season with 6 goals and 11 assists in all competitions but the English side finished second in the league, 19 points behind Manchester City.

The midfielder was one of the standout players in this year’s world cup and helped his nation France to lift the trophy after 20 years, even scoring against Croatia in the finals.  He received praises for his impressive displays and hailed as one of the driving forces for the team.

However, the player has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona and Juventus this summer and with the European window still open, he is still linked with an exit.

Amid transfer links, he returned to training last week after post World Cup holiday and even started in the club’s first match of the season against Leicester City on Friday. He was given the Captain’s armband and converted a penalty to give the team 1-0 lead.

Former United Striker Dimitar Berbatov has praised Pogba’s performance against the Foxes and believes he will stay at Old Trafford this season.

He told betfair: “I was very happy with the display of Paul Pogba against Leicester, it was a real captain’s performance.

“He was everywhere on the pitch, passed it well, took the penalty with confidence – considering it was the first game, it was very encouraging.

“There has been chat in the media about him being unhappy, but I think the newspapers and social media are always focused on that side of things, trying to find problems that aren’t necessarily there, constantly exaggerating – it’s on the pitch that matters.

“These stories are not good for anybody, but Jose and Pogba will figure it out.”
