Unsportsmanlike tactics in focus as FC Copenhagen players reacts to Alejandro Garnacho’s heel dig

Manchester United’s recent Champions League match against FC Copenhagen was overshadowed by controversy, as Copenhagen star Victor Claesson expressed his disapproval at an incident involving Alejandro Garnacho and the penalty spot. Manchester United conceded a penalty in stoppage time, but goalkeeper Andre Onana made an important save, maintaining the Red Devils’ clean sheet.

Claesson told Bold.dk: “It’s unsportsmanlike. It’s not something I stand for or would do, but if he’s done it, he’s done it.”

He added: “I don’t think that was what decided whether he missed or scored.”

Jordan Larsson of Copenhagen took the penalty attempt, but the shot was stopped by Onana’s extended glove. The bold act of the goalie sparked exuberant celebrations from his United teammates.

While the players in Copenhagen were arguing with the referee, viewers at home witnessed Garnacho’s actions. Many others thought it was unsportsmanlike for the young United star to dig his heels into the turf around the penalty spot.

Copenhagen captain Victor Claesson was very upset when he learned about Garnacho’s questionable maneuver during halftime. The incident brought a touch of controversy to an already tense encounter, which was won by Manchester United due to Harry Maguire’s second-half header.

Both bosses, Erik ten Hag and Jacob Neestrup, mentioned they were unaware of the incident. However, Claesson’s frustration shows the narrow line between competitiveness and fair play in professional football, leaving fans and experts discussing the ethics of such methods in the pursue of victory.
