Erik ten Hag warns Maguire to fight for his place

Harry Maguire was stripped of his captaincy earlier this campaign.

The English defender has struggled to live up to the standards needed to maintain at United since his big-money move from Leicester City in 2019.

He has fallen down the pecking order behind Raphael Varane, Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez.

His form deteriorated to such an extent that Erik ten Hag has deployed Luke Shaw in the centre-back position.

Maguire has endured a difficult spell over the last 18 months and came close to joining West Ham earlier this week but the move collapsed.

Manager Erik ten Hag has urged the former club captain to fight for his place at Old Trafford.

‘It’s up to him [how much he plays],’ Ten Hag said.

‘He knows what to expect from me. I’ve been here for one year now and you know what I expect from a centre half. And he can do it, I’ve told you many times before he has the ability to do it so now he has to show it.

‘Harry is a player for us, I am happy he is here, we need a good squad, we have four good centre-halves – including Luke Shaw we have five – and we need it because we are going to play 50-60 games this season.

‘All the players are internationals, so we have a very heavy load to cover so I am happy Harry Maguire is here.’
