Manchester United are considering Darren Fletcher for the role of the technical director.

A disappointing season ended with a shambolic defeat to Cardiff City on the last day and club hierarchy is expected to bring in a number of changes to the current system. One of them is appointing a technical director who would work as a bridge between the manager and the chairman.

former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho refused to work under a technical director but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already sanctioned the move to bring accountability in the club ranks.

United are believed to be preferring candidates with a past history with clubs and Fletcher has the advantage of having played over 300 matches for the Red Devils. United also have had a discussion with former defender Rio Ferdinand too and he is also interested in taking this new job.

A number of former players are currently working at various positions at the club Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the senior team manager, Michale Carrick is one of Solskjaer’s assistants while Nicky Butt is the academy manager.

Fletcher currently plies his trade for Stoke City in the Championship but is likely not to be offered a contract extension when his existing deal expires in the summer.

Ander Herrera has backed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to carry forward the Manchester United mantle successfully.

The Norwegian was handed the charge after the dismissal of Jose Mourinho back in December last year and had managed to turn the tide to United’s favour.

The Red Devils broke into the Premier League top four and also fought from two goals down to tame down Paris Saint Germain to book a place in the Champions League quarters.

United hierarchy decided to trust him with the permanent managerial post but that hasn’t gone down well so far. United have managed just two wins in this phase and defeats against Cardiff City and Barcelona have hurt the Red Devils very much.

Herrera said, “I really believe in Ole. I really believe in Michael [Carrick], Kieran [McKenna], Mick Phelan, in Demps (Mark Dempsey), but I think there is a tough job ahead.

“That is my opinion as a fan and as someone who knows the club at the moment.

“These fans are the best, they are amazing, but they need time. They need time because this is not going to be from the first day. The club will need time, confidence and support

“I am sure they will give it but the only thing I ask for them is time because this is not easy.

“[But] the right person is at the wheel. He’s the right person”

Juan Mata has underlined his disappointment following Manchester United’s harrowing 2-0 loss to Cardiff City on the final day of the Premier League season.

The Red Devils were expected to get past the already relegated side with ease but a lack of intent and purpose saw Cardiff getting the better off the English giants.

United’s failure to win this game meant there will be no Champions League football next season and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will be competing in the Europa League.

Mata’s contract is set to expire at the end of this season and the Spaniard could be the third player after Ander Herrera and Antonio Valencia as he is yet to take a decision on his future.

Mata said, “A defeat on the Premier League’s final weekend was the worst way to finish off what hasn’t been a good campaign for anyone who is part of the Manchester United family.

“There have been some good moments and matches along the way, which have to be remembered, but the feeling, in the end, is very bitter.

“None of us are satisfied with the general performance levels that we have offered, for one reason or another. When we win, we do so together, and when we lose we also share the responsibility.

“Now is the moment to analyse, reflect and improve, because this club should be in a different situation to the one we find ourselves in, there can be no doubt about that.

“Although it isn’t healthy to just focus on the negatives, it also isn’t possible to deny the obvious. We have to be realistic and the season has been very disappointing.

“It’s very painful and that feeling will last through the whole summer. You all deserve a lot more than what you’re getting. That is the reality.”
