Erik ten Hag explains why Varane has been dropped from first-team squad

Raphael Varane has struggled for gametime at Man United this campaign.

The French international has started only one of United’s last seven games and has surprisingly fallen out of favour this campaign.

According to several sources, Varane is currently unhappy with his role at Old Trafford and Erik ten Hag is eyeing some defensive changes this January.

The Dutch manager is currently satisfied with the current partnership of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans at the back.

Varane has attracted the interest of several Saudi Arabia clubs and a move makes sense at this stage of his career.

But Erik ten Hag still views the former Real Madrid defender as a regular starter and wants him to stay beyond the winter transfer window.

The manager was asked if there has been a falling out between him and the defender in recent times.

He told Metro: “Absolutely not. As I said, it is about tactical reasons why I chose these partnerships. I think Harry and Jonny did well.

“What I said last year, Harry didn’t play a lot, so I was very happy with Rapha’s performances. I have always been happy with his performance. But in this moment, Harry is playing very well and there is internal competition.”
