Manchester United FC new signing Fred

The Brazil International was one of the three signings this summer

Jose Mourinho prioritized signing a holding midfielder this summer as Michael Carrick retired from the club at the end of the season.

Manchester United completed the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred for a fee in the region of £52.5 million. He signed a five-year deal which includes a club option for a further 12 months upon its expiry.

The Brazil International joined the Ukrainian team from Internacional for a reported fee of €15 million in 2013 and made 156 appearances since joining them.

The Red Devils reached an agreement to sign the Brazilian two weeks before the official announcement after he underwent a medical at United’s AON Training Complex less than 24 hours after turning out for the Selecao in their pre-tournament friendly win over Croatia at Anfield.

Mourinho was keeping tabs on the 25 year old since January after the player impressed him with his consistent performances in the Champions League. Pep Guardiola was also interested in him but United blown them out of water.

Fred has revealed how Arsenal legend Gilberto Silva helped convince him of a move to Old Trafford this summer.

“There were options in England and in Europe,” He said as quoted by Express Sport.

“Manchester City, PSG, but I chose United. I spoke to my agent Gilberto Silva, who played for Arsenal.

“He told me that United was a huge club. I spoke to my family and friends.

“When I said United, I saw their faces. I’m sure that I made the right choice.

“I want to play in and win the Premier League, the best league in the world.

“I had a proposal from China too, but I didn’t want to go there because I wanted to join United.”

The midfielder impressed on his debut against Leicester City on Friday as the Premier League giants won the match 2-1.
