Manchester United eyeing a move for Roma star in January

The player would fill the profile the club wanted

Jose Mourinho prioritized bolstering his squad during the summer transfer window after an underwhelming campaign last season, not winning a single silverware. They finished second in the Premier League, 19 points behind Manchester City.

The Red Devils secured three signings during the transfer window, teenage full-back Diogo Dalot from Porto, while a £52.5 million fee was agreed with Shakhtar Donetsk for Brazil international Fred and goalkeeper Lee Grant from Stoke City.

The Portuguese expressed his frustration few times as the club failed to add any more players he wanted before the transfer deadline. He wanted a fast, direct winger and an experienced centre-back to complete his squad.

However, it has been reported that he will be backed by the Premier League giants during the January transfer window and are eyeing a move for a player that was also identified during the summer.

Manchester United are already sizing up Roma’s Lorenzo Pellegrini for a possible January move, the Sun reports.

The 22 year joined the youth academy of the Serie A giants at the age of 9 but was sold to Sassuolo for a fee of €1.25 million in 2015 with the club retaining a buy back clause.

Giallorossi exercised the buy back clause of €10 million and brought back the Italian on a 5 year deal last summer. He was a regular for the club, scoring 3 goals and providing 5 assists in 36 appearances during the 2017/2018 campaign.

The midfielder was linked with an exit this summer with the English side one of the clubs chasing him but a deal was not followed through. But the club are now lining up for January reinforcements.

He fits the profile of a box-to-box midfielder to give the team a more dynamic link between attack and defence but a new centre-back remains manager Mourinho’s priority.
