Erik ten Hag identified the absence of a back-up right back as a problem that might be examined during the winter window

It was always intended for Manchester United to have a quiet January transfer window following their massive summer spending spree of almost £200 million.

But after acknowledging that starting full-back Diogo Dalot had been overworked, Erik ten Hag raised the problem of the absence of a backup right back as something that might be investigated during the winter transfer window. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, a favourite of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who had played only four minutes before the World Cup, was handled in a way that made it clear he was no longer in the manager’s plans.

Wan-Bissaka is still anticipated to leave, despite his performances against Burnley in the EFL Cup and Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. The loss of Cristiano Ronaldo and the ensuing necessity to sign a top-tier goal scorer have hampered United’s search for a right-back.

If Wan-Bissaka leaves on loan in January, the club is still dedicated to signing a player to compete with the Portuguese international. Many names have been connected with a move to Old Trafford in January, but much will rely on the player’s value given the club’s present financial difficulties.

Malo Gusto of Lyon is one of the names that is frequently associated with the Red Devils. But given the interest he is arousing among Europe’s elites, hiring him in January or next summer won’t be simple.
